Dear North Carolina elected leaders and candidates for political office,
I am signing this petition to ask that you publicly donate any money you raised from or with Harvey West to the child sex trafficking prevention organization Present Age Ministries. I am also asking you to publicly disavow Harvey West and promise the people of North Carolina that you will never choose predators over our kids again. We can’t trust you to keep us safe when you’re choosing to fundraise with a known child sex offender.
A law enforcement officer abused his position of power and sexually assaulted young girls
But a political party boss and judicial candidates welcomed him into North Carolina’s most powerful political circles in exchange for campaign cash. Corruption of the worst kind, choosing money and connections over our safety.
When Harvey West was a 28-year-old police officer, he was charged with rape and other sex offenses after sexually assaulting multiple young girls. He was convicted of child sex offenses and placed on the sex offender registry. Despite that, North Carolina Republican Party elites welcomed him, making him one of their leaders and big fundraisers.
He became especially known for raising money for judges. All five of North Carolina’s Republican Supreme Court justices, and current North Carolina Supreme Court candidate Rep. Sarah Stevens, raised funds from West at his mansion in eastern North Carolina. According to a recent interview with West, they knew all about his sex crimes and decided to come ask for his cash anyway.
And even after fellow Republicans sounded the alarm about West leading party events that focused on children, the establishment protected him.
Our elected leaders should be focused on protecting kids, not predators. It’s time for everyone who raised money with Harvey West to give up their dirty donations. And for everyone who boosted his political career to disavow him. They must immediately send the full amount of the donations to Present Age Ministries, a respected faith-based organization committed to combating the sexual abuse, exploitation and trafficking of teen girls. Rep. Stevens and Justices Berger, Newby, Barringer, Dietz and Allen have broken our trust. The question now is: will they apologize and try to do right by our communities and our families?
